Suspenseful. Balanced. Succinct.
Put simply, ‘Why Did You Kill Me?’ is good. I won't tell you that it is the best documentary ever made. However, if you, like me, are beginning to tire of Netflix’s typically overdramatised and drawn-out true-crime documentaries, ‘Why Did You Kill Me?’ truly is a breath of fresh air. Following the murder of Crystal Theobald and her family's quest for justice, the documentary handles the complexities of gang crime, the rash decisions loss might lead us to, and most importantly that there are two sides to every story. I felt that ‘Why Did You Kill Me?’ is one of the few true-crime documentaries that effectively handles both sides, and within a very watchable time frame.. As the case is closed, there’s no ‘injustice narrative’ or ‘who dunnit’. Director Fred Munk isn’t trying to persuade the audience to one side or another but instead encourages the audience to engage and understand people’s character.
