Direct. Explicit. Self-referential.
This trilogy is the most Louis Theroux compilation of topics that could exist: Racists, Rap and Porn. In each, Louis is in his element, because I think these are the topics that interest him the most, that is why he goes back to these topics time and time again. However, he always manages to make something new out of them. I think this episode is structured really well, by starting with the #metoo movement and then moving to the cause and the response, rather than a more traditional approach of talking about the assaults and then the women speaking out. I think it is a small touch which has made the episode more engaging and respectful to the women, putting their stories and response as the focus. He also asks the questions we’re all thinking. However, by now we do expect this from Louis, and as we’ve seen him in this situation before the shock factor isn’t quite there, but this doesn’t make this any less entertaining. As well as referring to his previous porn documentary, Twilight of the Porn Stars, there’s also a slight reference to college campus sexual assault, a topic he covered in The Night in Question. I do slightly wish he’d somehow managed to make a mega-documentary, combining the two topics to dig in deeper, but maybe I’m just being greedy.
