The English Doctor is a very insightful film following NHS brain surgeon Henry Marsh on a trip to Ukraine, where he visits and operates frequently. Marsh has developed both a professional and social relationship with fellow brain surgeon Igor Petrovich, and the film follows their work together, diagnosing and operating on patients. The film gives a fascinating insight into a Soviet healthcare system, in which creative solutions are being made to tackle modern surgery. It does not
act as a denouncement of Ukraine or a heralding of the UK’s NHS but instead has a more human and social approach, concerning language barriers, the wonder of surgery, the ingenuity of the soviet surgeons and the suffering that comes from a poorly funded healthcare system.
