59 minutes.

Terrifying. Triggering. Impossible.

I do not think anyone should have to watch this documentary. The racism, ableism, homophobia and sexism that is expressed through the contributors of this documentary is absolutely vile, and it is incredibly uncomfortable to watch so blatantly on screen in the comfort of your home. However, that doesn’t mean I think such a documentary shouldn't be made. And no one else, in my opinion, could have done this other than Louis Theroux. This is where he always has and always will excel. He can make contributors comfortable enough to say their most disgusting thoughts, without egging them on, and challenge them without losing his composure; like Sacha Baron Cohen, but without the costumes. I believe that is why he continuously can get access to these groups of people, who are becoming more and more mainstream. My main issue with this documentary, is that there is no conclusion. Louis says the aim is to find out the motivations and techniques that the far right use. I don’t feel this is done. But once again (and perhaps my Louis bias is showing), I don’t think this is Louis’ fault. How can you get reason out of the unreasonable? I think, like Louis’ quest to meet Michael Jackson, this was an impossible task. I wish this documentary had some element of hope or direction, and I’m sure he would too. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.
